A diseased tree can eventually destroy the look of your garden and really should be removed as soon as possible but there are a few things you can do before you call in the tree surgeons.

Almost everybody has a tree on their property that has some type of disease that is eating away at it, little by little. The signs are obvious in the way the leaves keep dropping off, the look of the bark, and the way the whole tree simply looks so sad. But this does not have to be a serious problem for homeowners anymore, nor does it have to affect the other trees on the property. The best way to deal with diseased trees is to remove them, and that is best done by the experts.

What You Can Do

There are certain things you can do to deal with the diseased tree before you even talk to an arborist. First, you should consider sterilizing the soil, and using a pesticide to kill any insects that have caused a disease to infect your tree. This will help keep trees alive that have not yet been affected or have shown signs of disease. Next, you may want to also consider pruning off the diseased branches to stop the problem. Also, a good idea to prevent the spread of disease is to remove old stumps from your property. You may want to avoid damaging the trunks of your trees if at all possible. Damage to a tree trunk gives a tree-killing insect or fungus to seep down deep into the tree where it’s hard to prevent the spread of disease.

to cut it down. Cutting down what was once your favorite sitting tree can be really sad, but a diseased tree can become a liability because it can fall on your house and cause even more damage to your property….More at Dealing with Diseased Trees

Below is a video about The Great Banyan, this is a banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) located in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, near Kolkata, India. It was the widest tree in the world in terms of the area of the canopy and is estimated to be about 200 to 250 years old. It became diseased after it was struck by lightning, so in 1925 the middle of the tree was excised to keep the remainder healthy; this has left it as a clonal colony, rather than a single tree. A 330 m long road was built around its circumference, but the tree continues to spread beyond it.
